Short Description : The European Centre for Minority Issues is an international research institution focused on national minority studies in Europe. It is organized across six research clusters that encapsulate the range of social, legal and political issues that national minorities face around the continent. With a staff of around 20 people, the ECMI conducts primary research, provides policy advice, issues publications, organizes events, offers training services and engages with the broader public on all areas of minority affairs. The Centre was founded in 1996 by the governments of Denmark, Germany and the Land Schleswig-Holstein. In addition to its main building in Flensburg, the Centre has over the years run action-oriented projects in North Macedonia, Ukraine, Georgia and most recently Serbia. Whilst working primarily in English, our team represents some 15 different nationalities and a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds. Visiting researchers are welcome to participate in our events as well as liaise with all of our staff and partners. Currently, the Centre is the lead partner for an EU COST Action entitled PLURILINGMEDIA that focuses on minority-language media across Europe. We also have special research foci on minority contestation in Turkey and Crimea, gender and minorities, socio-economic participation among minorities as well as minority language revitalization.
