Short Description : The Center for Research on Sustainability and Transformation (CREST) was established in October 2023 to connect and promote the growing and intensifying research on sustainability and transformation topics at Europa-Universität Flensburg (EUF). It brings together over 50 members from all faculties and disciplines of the university—ranging from the natural, social, economic, legal, and educational sciences to the cultural and humanities disciplines.
In doing so, CREST unites a wide range of interdisciplinary expertise at the university on pressing socio-ecological research topics such as the consequences of climate change, biodiversity loss, increasing social inequalities, and the diverse challenges of socio-technical transformations. The center aims to support the transition toward a sustainable future through problem-, process-, and solution-oriented research.
The thematic spectrum of CREST members’ research is remarkably broad: from sustainable energy system transformation, energy system modeling, and approaches to sufficient lifestyles, to biodiversity research, education for sustainable development, sustainable landscape development, and sustainable nutrition, to questions of sustainable corporate management, urban geography, post-growth, urban transformation, sustainability and future ethics, psychological questions of fear of the future, and literary treatment of climate change, social transformation, and sustainability, CREST research covers the entire spectrum of current challenges and their historical roots.
The common thread and interdisciplinary interface of CREST research lie in its socio-ecological approach to inquiry: from the natural sciences to the humanities, issues and phenomena of transformation and sustainability are examined in their social and cultural embeddedness. This provides the foundation for the strong interdisciplinary orientation and cohesion of CREST’s research activities.
Against this background, the center’s mission is to support the research projects and initiatives of CREST members (including assistance with third-party funding applications and ongoing projects), to strengthen inter- and transdisciplinary networking both internally and externally (through transfer and networking formats), and to promote early-career researchers (research training and support).
