EMERGE Hub in Alexandroupolis hosted the highly successful SCIENCE HUB event.

The event was organized by the Laboratory of Science Education of the Department of Primary Education at Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH), in collaboration with the Laboratorium Educational Center, the 1st Experimental Primary School of Alexandroupolis, and the 6th Experimental Junior High School of Alexandroupolis.

By opening its doors to this initiative, the EMERGE Hub was transformed into a lively, interactive science workshop. University students, alongside primary and secondary school students, utilized our space to present fascinating science experiments, creating an inspiring environment of collaboration, inquiry, and scientific exploration.

Key Highlights of the Event:

  • Meaningful Interaction: Teachers, university students, school students, parents, and members of the local community came together inside the Hub to exchange ideas and experiences.

  • University Outreach: By utilizing the EMERGE Hub, the event strengthened DUTH’s connection with local society, opening the university’s doors to people of all ages.

  • Familiarization with Academia: Parents and students had the opportunity to visit the Hub, becoming familiar with the university environment, its spaces, and its educational processes.

  • Stronger Collaborations: The event paved the way for further joint initiatives between the university, local schools, and educational centers operating in the city.

The Participants’ Experience

In their reflections, the DUTH students particularly emphasized the enthusiasm and active participation of the children, who experimented and asked insightful questions. As one participant noted, “science becomes much more appealing to children when it moves beyond the textbook and becomes a hands-on experience.” At the same time, hosting this event offered a valuable pedagogical experience for the university students themselves, allowing them to practice explaining complex scientific concepts in simple, understandable terms to children of different ages.

The SCIENCE HUB successfully demonstrated how science education can function as a bridge between the university and society. We are thrilled that the EMERGE Hub played a key role in making this day an absolute success, and we want to thank everyone who participated!
