The future of European Higher Education was at the heart of a dynamic panel discussion titled “The Future of Higher Education in Europe: European University Alliances as Drivers of Innovation, Internationalisation, and Regional Development”, co-organized in the context of the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF).
The event was co-organized by Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH), member of EMERGE European University Alliance, Europe Direct East Macedonia and Thrace, and the Representation of the European Commission in Greece. Hosted at Pavilion 10 (Representation of the European Commission in Greece), the gathering created a meaningful space for dialogue on the role of European University Alliances in shaping the university of tomorrow and strengthening the European Higher Education Area.
The discussion was moderated by Panagiotis Bardakis, Community Engagement Officer for EMERGE.

The session focused on the opportunities, challenges, and transformative potential of European cooperation in higher education. Particular emphasis was placed on how European University Alliances can move beyond standard institutional partnerships to contribute to a more open, connected, inclusive, and future-oriented university landscape—creating new opportunities for students, academics, researchers, and society as a whole.
Representing DUTH within the EMERGE Alliance, Rector Prof. Maria Michalopoulou highlighted the strategic role of inter-university networks in driving regional development, promoting innovation, and bringing academic communities closer across Europe.

The event drew an engaged audience, bringing together university leadership, professors, academic staff, students, and members of the wider public.
